It began with a dream — a visionary Vietnamese doctor in Da Nang imagined a future where every newborn had a chance to live. That dream became reality when UK neonatal experts came to Vietnam, and four years of training at Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children led to a big reduction in newborn deaths.
As we celebrate 10 years of IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam and 10 years of the Newborns Community Run, we honour the heroes behind the journey — especially Mike Hall, world-renowned endurance cyclist. Mike’s unwavering belief in our mission brought him to Vietnam in 2013 and 2015 for the Cycle a Difference Challenge Rides. His courage, endurance, and advocacy raised the funds that made four years of UK-led neonatal training possible. That success laid the foundation for today’s national newborn resuscitation programme, reaching 190 hospitals in 62 provinces and saving thousands of lives.
Mike tragically lost his life during an ultra-cycling race in Australia in 2017. But his spirit lives on — in every newborn saved, in every runner who joins our cause, and in his cousin Adam, who is running 100km in Cuc Phuong National Park to honour Mike’s legacy. Without Mike Hall and an incredible group of UK and Vietnamese cyclists the Newborns 10 year journey would not have been possible.
In the next month we will celebrate the heroes of 10 Years of Newborns Vietnam. We remember. We celebrate. We carry the torch forward. We invite you to donate to Adams’ Just Giving Page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/my100kmultrafornewborns
